The villages of Lavin, Guarda and Ardez are located in the Lower Engadine in the canton of Graubünden, in the very east of Switzerland. The Romansh-speaking Lower Engadine, Romansh Engiadina Bassa, is crossed by the Inn River and borders Austria and Italy. Impressive mountain giants such as the Piz Linard, the Verstanclahorn and the Piz Buin separate the Engadin from the Paznauntal in the north. On the southern side of the valley from Lavin and Guarda, the Macun lake district rises to 2,600 m as part of the Swiss National Park. Large areas of the mountain landscape around the three villages are landscapes and natural monuments of national importance.
